LOOSE MORALS

By: Sellers Crain, Jr., Via Rivergate Bulletin

Sometimes it is hard for those of us who are Christians to realize how bad it has gotten out there in the “real world.”  If you have any doubts, let me tell you some of the things I have heard recently.  On the radio there was an advertisement for people who were in “committed, intimate relationships” (make that “sexual relationships”) to contact this company that is doing research on a new drug to help their relationship be worry free.  When I was young, the only committed, intimate relationship I knew of was marriage.  That is still true today whether society in general accepts that or not.  A sexual relationship outside of marriage is neither committed or intimate.  It is sin.

On a news magazine show, I learned a new word, “hooking.”  This is where young people, mostly teens, get someone to “hook them up” with someone of the opposite sex for the sole purpose of having a sexual relationship.  They don’t even have to know their real name.  In many cases, they will never see that person again.  How can we have such a casual attitude towards something that is so life altering, and which can have far reaching and even eternal consequences?

Another example is that of a young man in England who is trying to sell his virginity.  He has an internet web site for just that purpose where people bid to be the one with whom he has his first sexual experience.  What is different from what he is doing and prostitution?  He was asked that question, but he denied any similarity.  One question asked him by the female correspondent really shocked me:  “Wouldn’t it be better to wait until you have a relationship with someone who really means something to you?”  He made it clear that was not important to him.  Pardon me, but if someone really means that much to you, you will marry them.  Otherwise it is purely physical.

Jesus told His disciples in essence, that “We are in the world but not of the world.”  (see John 15:19;  17:14-18)  James says, “keep yourselves unspotted from the world.”  (James 1:27)
